How Proactive Representation Helped Resolve an HSA Case

For many taxpayers, receiving a standard IRS notice is stressful enough. However, navigating a tax issue with the IRS under a time crunch can add to the pressure.

This was the particular situation our member, David, was facing. The IRS had issued him a notice regarding his 2025 tax return. Complicating matters, David did not receive the original IRS notice on time. After moving, the letter was misplaced and ultimately ended up at his apartment's front office rather than reaching him directly. By the time he obtained the notice, valuable time had already passed.

However, rather than letting the delay become a roadblock, David immediately reached out to us here at TaxAudit to start a case. He was first connected with our customer service representative, Myrriah. She confirmed his information and then moved his case forward to one of our case coordinators, Louis.

Louis requested a copy of the IRS notice David had received, as well as the corresponding tax return. He also reassured David that he was in good hands and then assigned his case to one of our world-class tax professionals, Maryam.

Getting to the Root of the Issue

During the initial call, Maryam took the time to review David's situation with him and determine the next steps.

First, she informed him that the IRS notice was concerning a Health Savings Account distribution. The IRS was proposing additional tax because Form 8889 had not been filed or because the IRS did not have sufficient documentation showing that the HSA funds had been used for qualified medical expenses. However, David believed that his funds had been used correctly and forwarded the documentation to prove that the expenses were legitimate.

Securing Representation and Preparing a Response

Once Maryam received David's documentation, she prepared the necessary response package, including Form 8889 and supporting information demonstrating that the HSA funds had been used for qualified medical expenses. After the package was completed and approved by our quality control team, administrative services uploaded the response directly to the IRS and documented the successful submission.

Staying Proactive

One of the most frustrating parts of dealing with the IRS can be waiting. Processing delays are common, and taxpayers are often left wondering whether their documents were received or whether progress is being made.

Rather than simply submitting the response and waiting indefinitely, Maryam kept David informed every step of the way. She explained that IRS processing could take several months and assured him that we would follow up with the agency periodically. She also instructed him not to respond directly to the IRS but to forward any correspondence to her team.

A Successful Resolution

Fortunately for David, his case moved faster than most. Only two months after Maryam submitted the response, and shortly after several follow-up phone calls, the IRS issued a resolution letter confirming that the case had been resolved and that David owed no additional tax.

The Member's Perspective

Perhaps the best summary of the experience came from David himself after the case was resolved:

Maryam was extremely knowledgeable, patient, and courteous throughout the process. She was thorough and detailed, answering every one of my tax questions clearly. She walked me through the next steps, laid out the possible scenarios, and explained the options for resolving the audit under each one. She assured me she would stay with my case until it was resolved, however long that took. She was consistently responsive, reaching out promptly by both email and phone. She worked directly with the IRS, answered all of their inquiries, and got the issue resolved within just a few days. I was truly impressed and would highly recommend her to anyone facing an IRS audit.

For David, what started as a stressful IRS notice became a fully resolved issue backed by experienced representation. And for us at TaxAudit, it was another opportunity to do what matters most: stand with members, advocate on their behalf, and stay with them until the case is resolved.
