Resolving a CP2000 Notice

Blocks that say "IRS Problem" and "Resolution"

In January of 2025, Minho and Hannah received a CP2000 notice from the IRS, which included a proposed amount due of over $5,000. After reviewing the notice and their tax return for the 2023 tax year, Minho and Hannah decided they needed help. They remembered that they had purchased Audit Defense through TaxAudit and immediately called to get the ball rolling. They spoke to a customer service representative, Corey, who started a case for them. They were then assigned to a case coordinator, Azaryiah, who would provide administrative support throughout the duration of the case. Azaryiah requested a complete copy of the letter that they had received, along with a copy of their 2023 tax return. Once these documents were collected, Azaryiah assigned their case to Sheila.

Sheila is one of TaxAudit’s many incredible tax professionals who has extensive experience in handling CP2000s and resolving tax issues. After reviewing the couple’s documentation, Sheila called Minho and Hannah to discuss their case. She explained that, based on the letter they received from the IRS, they had unreported income related to securities and employee stocks. However, she believed that the IRS had calculated the amount the taxpayers owed incorrectly. She worked with Minho and Hannah to gather all relevant documentation and put together a response package for the IRS. After being reviewed and approved by the quality control team, the correspondence was sent to the IRS.

After a few weeks, Minho and Hannah received IRS Letter 4314C, which confirmed the receipt of the response but stated that the IRS needed an additional 90 days to review the documentation.

During this waiting period, Sheila reached out every four weeks to check in with Minho and Hannah and verified that no additional letters from the IRS had been received. After the initial 90 days, Minho and Hannah received another IRS Letter 4314C requesting an additional 90 days to review the response. Sheila let the taxpayers know that, as frustrating as these delays were, they are a routine part of navigating cases with the IRS.

Fortunately, only a few weeks later, Minho and Hannah received an IRS Letter CP2005. The letter stated that the IRS had accepted the response, and they would no longer owe the $5,000!

Minho and Hannah were ecstatic and thankful for Sheila's expertise and dedication every step of the journey. Even at the closing of their case, Sheila walked them through the issues on the tax return to ensure they had a strong understanding of what caused the issue in the first place so they could avoid making it again in the future.
